| What is the HBN-BIC? | | |
The HBN-BIC is a business plan competition open to everyone. If you have identified a business opportunity, this competition may be for you. You can write up the idea in a couple of pages, say why you think it will work and how, who the customers and the competitors are and what you will do to succeed. You’ll have a chance to win up to $20,000 from the HBN-BIC to develop it into a real business. We’ll also help you connect with mentors and experienced pros to help you free of charge.
|
| |
| How is the HBN-BIC different from the MIT 100K? | | |
Tthe HBN-BIC is open to everyone. Unlike the MIT 100K, you do not have to have a MIT-affiliated or university-affiliated member of the team to compete. Also, you don’t have to be a legal or financial firm to sponsor it. You can be a “private citizen” with an interest in the entrepreneurial process. However, the HBN-BIC is modeled after the highly successful MIT100K in many other ways. In fact, our Lead Organizer is a multiple MIT100K competitor. The MIT100K is by far the most successful business idea competition in the world. It has generated a total exit value of 10 Billion dollars (2.5B + 7.5B for one company: Akamai) for the companies that went through it in the last 18 years.

| |
| Why should I support the HBN-BIC? | | |
Support emerging entrepreneurs. The US has become a country where we no longer make much with our hands. What we make and what makes the country wealthy is Intellectual Property, new technologies, new methodologies. We’ve become the brains while the hands are increasingly elsewhere. This is how wealth is generated in the US today.
Unless you’re a Venture Capitalist or an Angel Investor, it’s difficult to find ways to efficiently invest in and support bright new ventures because there are few avenues. Our competition offers you a unique and exciting avenue. You can be involved, witness the incubation process and back the winners. To make this competition a reality, we need your time, talent and treasure. Tax deductible contributions. Your donation to HBN-BIC is tax deductible. You will know you are investing in the future of the wider community. Everyone here is a volunteer and the entire HBN is a non-profit organization. We’re doing it because we love it!
Ethnic pride. Many ethnic and cultural communities take pride in their communities and people by investing in each other. This is an opportunity to spread Greek values and sensibilities, and to generate goodwill towards Greeks at home and abroad. It is a chance to benefit both the place you’re in – the Greek community in Boston – as well as the Motherland. Greeks have been regarded as traditionally savvy entrepreneurs but there needs to be more support for emerging entrepreneurs.
Open to everyone. The majority of BICs are university based. Yet, there is also great entrepreneurial potential within non-students. So many people of all ages and walks of life have great ideas but no idea how to bring them to market! You can be part of this exciting process for the next big thing. Imagine translating your intangible idea into a market player that adds value and generates wealth! Entrepreneurship is good for the wider community. Everybody wins from inventing and investing in new ways to generate wealth.

| I have a business idea… But can I reveal it? What if it is stolen? |
| |
All HBN-BIC organizers who come into contact with the submitted ideas sign a blanket Non-Disclosure Agreement and you should always present your business idea without divulging the “secret sauce.” Of course, we advise everyone to get proper legal counseling before submitting anything, especially if you’re really worried. Note that most Venture Capital firms, Angel and other investors will NEVER sign NDAs because the team is just as (if not more) important as the idea itself. If the idea is so obvious and unprotected by patents that it is liable to be stolen and developed profitably immediately by many competitors then it’s not going to be a profitable idea anyway so either get IP protection first or go back to the drawing board!

| |
| What if I don’t have anyone that is Greek or of Hellenic origin on my team? Won’t we be excluded or have less chance of winning, given that it’s sponsored by the Hellenic Business Network? | | |
The HBN-BIC is open to everyone and is based on the Hellenic ideal of meritocracy. This is like the Olympic Games: All teams will be treated equally – whether or not they have a member of Hellenic descent. The entire competition is going to be in English and we fully expect to have many non-Greek judges, mentors, investors, participants and keynote speakers. At the same time, since the HBN and Greece are being used as springboards for this effort, there will naturally be a sizeable Hellene and Philhellene presence. Regardless, the best idea wins, and the presence or absence of any affiliation to Greece plays no role in the winner selection process.

| |
| I have a business idea but have limited knowledge about that particular industry (finance, technology, bio, pharma, etc.). What now? |
| |
That’s why the team building events exist. HBN will provide the platform and resources for you to meet team members with complementary skill sets to help you take your vision to the next level.
|
| |
| What services and benefits will I receive as an HBN-BIC Participant? | | |

| If my team wins, do we have to spend the money on the business? |
| |
No, if you want you can take the money and run.
|
| |
| What does HBN want in return? |
| |
Goodwill. If you become wildly successful we’ll be happy for you, likely feature your success on our web site and other media (TV, press etc.) and will hope you come back as a mentor, judge or sponsor and help some other struggling entrepreneur.
|
| |
| I have a great idea for a non-profit venture. Can I compete? | | |
You can’t enter a non-profit business plan during the 2007 cycle. But, in the 2008 cycle, HBN-BIC will add a social enterprise track to its Big Idea Competition.
| |
| What about for-profit social enterprises? | | |
We won’t exclude for-profit social enterprises from the first year of the competition. However, a formal social enterprise track will emerge in Year 2, which will include both for-profit and non-profit ventures.
| |
| I’m interested in financially supporting HBN-BIC. What are my options? |
| |
You can financially support the HBN-BIC through individual, foundation, and corporate contributions, [as follows]:
- Individual support. You can make individual contributions to HBN-BIC. Perhaps you have a successful business of your own, and appreciate the mentoring you received along the way. You can now help support new entrepreneurs as HBN-BIC grows through your individual financial contributions. You will receive a tax-deduction for this contribution since HBN is a registered non-profit organization. You and other individual donors will also be recognized on our web site, unless you wish to preserve anonymity.
- Foundation support. The HBN-BIC welcomes conversations with foundation affiliates about this new venture. If your organization supports such initiatives, just let us know. We can provide a detailed business plan and testimonials at your request.
- Corporate support. Your company or small business can support the HBN-BIC through our Sponsorship Program. | I’m interested in providing direct financial support to entrepreneurs. What are my options?
You can participate in the Big Idea Competition as an Investor, as investment opportunities will abound. The HBN-BIC will provide potential investors with efficient exposure to a large number of quality ideas. Investors can monitor the process and choose a team to back during or after the final results of the competition. As an investor, you can become a part of a competing or winning venture to ensure its success in the future. You can also have a say in its development, participate on the board of directors or negotiate an equity position or other return on investment plan. I have no money to give and/or no interest in giving money, but would like to be involved in some way. What are my options?
Your talent and time are just as welcome as your treasure. We have several different ways you can contribute beyond a financial gift. We’re looking for Volunteer Organizers, Judges, and Mentors to help us in our efforts. Just let us know what you think seems to be the best fit.
