Hellenic Business Network Student Mentorship Program (HBNStudentMentor): A new initiative with the goal of helping students of Hellenic origin transition to student life in the greater Boston colleges and universities.
Mentorship is an extremely valuable institution with ancient roots. Although interest in mentoring may be recent, the concept dates back to Greek mythology: In Homer's Odyssey, when Odysseus set off on his long journey, he entrusted his son Telemachus to an old man called "Mentor". Later, during part of Telemachus' travels, Mentor's advice proved extremely valuable: it even saved Telemachus from death. The father-like relationship between young Telemachus and the wise, loving Mentor set a standard for future mentoring relationships.
HBN would like to provide the opportunity for its already experienced professional and student members to become mentors of incoming students of Hellenic origin. Even a minimal effort from the mentor's side can be extremely valuable for the mentee. As a minimum, the mentor should try to meet with the mentee twice in the first year of his studies - for a quick coffee, a lunch, or a walk around Boston. Ultimately, he can become an informal advisor, supporter and friend - and most importantly a source of inspiration.
